The Space Needle is probably the best-known landmark of Seattle, Washington. It was originally built for the 1962 World's Fair.

The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 meters) high, and 138 feet (42 meters) wide at its widest point. The observation deck is 520 feet (158 meters) above the ground ground, and the SkyCity restaurant is 152 meters (500 feet).

In many photographs of Seattle, the Space Needle appears to rise above the rest of city's skyscrapers, however this is caused by a trick of perspective. This is because the Space Needle is 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers) to the Northwest of the skyscrapers, and most common camera angle places the Space Needle in the foreground.

Product Description:
The Space Needle is a towering 605-foot structure that seems to float above the Seattle landscape. At the time it was built, for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, it was a design and construction triumph and the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River. Today, it remains one of the most enduring symbols of Washington and of the Northwest.

Our nation's unique identity has been formed, in large part, by the monuments and landmarks we have erected. Structures such as the famous Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., stand today as permanent reminders of the people and events that have built a strong America. Many of these structures made history even as they were created; most integrated the latest in design and technology and required the skills of thousands of workers. For the first time, the Building America series chronicles the massive undertakings that mark some of the greatest triumphs of human engineering. The fact that these projects were even attempted, and then completed successfully, is a testament to the boldness of human ingenuity and a tribute to the brave spirit of the American people. It is that special spirit that is now captured in the pages of the Building America series.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington, and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and a symbol of Seattle. Located at the Seattle Center, it was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 m) high at its highest point and 138 feet (42 m) wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. When it was completed it was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph (320 km/h) and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. (which would protect the structure against an earthquake as powerful as the 1700 Cascadia earthquake). The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage.
