New York is both the most populous city in
the USA, as well as a leading center of business, commerce,
finance and media. The city, which is often referred to as "New York City", in order
to distinguish it from the state it is in (also called "New York", but often referred to as
"New York State"), as of
2004,
had an estimated population of 8,104,079. The city is part of a large metropolitan area,
and the combined city/metropolitan population exceeds 18.7 million.
