Miami is home to a major sea port, the Port of Miami, which both serves passenger and cargo traffic.
The port is in fact the busiest cruise/passenger port in the world, and has been for over a decade,
earning the nickname "Cruise Capital of the World".
The city of Miami also has a number of other nicknames, including
"The Gateway to the Americas". This refers to the fact that Miami has numerous
cultural and linguistic ties to North, Central and South America, as well as to the
Caribbean. As a result of these links, Miami has been selected as the headquarters
of Latin American operations for more than 1,400 multinational corporations, was also
selected as the host city for the
2003 Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)
negotiations, and is a candidate city to be the host of the FTAA's headquarters.

Tourism is an important industry. Many people are drawn to the area by the beautiful beaches in Miami
Beach (which is not actually part of the city of Miami), and the famous nightclub district in
South Beach (which is in Miami Beach).
